Hello – Hello! I’m so delighted you’re here, because there have been many inspirations and evolutions of A Dinky World over the years – it didn’t happen overnight – and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share this story with you!
So today I’m going to give you all the details, because I’m often asked:
How Did A Dinky World Start & What Was The Motivation?
Well, growing up in the 60s-70s, there was a simplicity to life, for me anyway, that was truly unforgettable.
There was also a different pace to life that was slower, and face-to-face relationships were more of a main crux of our day-to-day lifestyle.
There weren’t any: computers, videos, email, social media, cell phones, or instant round-the-clock news.
And while those things can be very positive, they also in my opinion, can create a sense of stress, feelings of rushing, urgency, and of always having to be available – RIGHT NOW – all-the-time!
Nope! As a kid, without any of that extra “stuff,” it meant relying on my own imagination more – and making my own fun, and having the peace, privacy and time to do so.
It Was A Blast To Get Lost In:
Comic Strips like:
- Peanuts
- Hagar the Horrible
- Broom Hilda
- Shoe
- Heathcliff
- Tumbleweeds
- I could list many more
Classic Saturday Morning Cartoons like:
- The Jetsons
- Underdog
- Mighty Mouse
- Yogi Bear
- Looney Tunes
- Tom & Jerry
- Bugs Bunny
- Wile E Coyote & Roadrunner
- Marvin the Martian
- I could list many more
And Sci-Fi TV shows like:
- Star Trek
- Twilight Zone
- Outer Limits
- Lost in Space
For the comic strips and cartoons, I just LOVED the imaginative and creative illustrations and stories, with their simple drawings and punchlines that said so much in just a few words. Brilliant!
And the Sci-Fi shows had such timely, innovative, ingenious, and visionary story-lines that gave hope for a better future.
I always wanted to actually live in those dynamic worlds, that looked like so much more fun than mine, and be best buds my favorite characters.
They had an upbeat vibe, and often a humorous take, no matter what direction the story-line took.
It Was Time To Create My Own World
The best way for me to begin was drawing comic strips, creating stories, unique locations and new characters.
What I loved, and still do love, about comic strips like Peanuts was that it was more than a comic strip. It was a community of neighbors and characters whose lives we got to look into, and be in their world with them everyday.
The characters could also become “friends” to us, so that we commiserated with their disappointments and cheered with their victories. I mean, who wouldn’t LOVE to see Charlie Brown FINALLY kick the football?
I know I would!
Comic strips could also be a commentary on social issues and community – giving voice to new ideas – but in a humorous way.
And, occasionally, they hit on what we all want, acceptance and helping one another – but in MY MIND these comic strips didn’t go far enough.
Something BETTER Could Be Imagined
I wanted the world that I was creating, to be a BETTER society. The friends that I imagined were kind, loving and trustworthy. They never let you down, or criticized you, and stuck by you no matter what.
But I wasn’t going to stop there, because we need SOME TENSION in life, otherwise we don’t strive for better, so I coupled my characters with unpredictable technology that captured the imagination from the old sci-fi shows, and today’s innovations.
And with the combing of these two main ideas……
A Dinky World Was Born!
I coupled the vibe of the 60s-70s, with modern and more advanced technology, to create the BEST of both worlds.
The MAIN idea is this: A Dinky World is an advanced society – who has the ability for an automated, virtual, and hi-tech lifestyle – but has realized the richness of life is actually found in small things and simple pleasures.
It’s About Friendship, Community, and Helping One Another With Love, Kindness & Understanding.
These ideals bring back the importance of in-person relationships between A Dinky World’s characters, but integrates them with advanced technology.
This integration helps A Dinky World Residents to live a better quality of life without allowing technology to take over, or to do any of their thinking FOR them.
Plus, it allows them to appreciate and concentrate more on the NOW.
The main characters: Filbert, Hazil, Basil, Leo and Mr. Biscuits have AIs, but only to relieve them of the more mundane tasks, so they have more time to relish what’s important – having fun with friends and creating new inventions that help others and improve their world. The Exciting Combination of Stories with Products
The Stories:
Instead of a daily comic strip, I provide monthly stories of what’s going on in A Dinky World, because it’s NEVER boring – something is always brewing!
Each month, some new chaos, challenge, accomplishment or achievement is happening because:
- Someone is always getting into trouble, or something is going awry
- The House AIs can be bossy
- The plants are sentient and can be mouthy
- Inventions can, and do, malfunction or blow up
And from those stories I create:
Products That Are Colorful & Cheerful:
